"Sognu" (English: "Dream") is a song by Amaury Vassili that will be the entry for France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The song was chosen internally by France 3 and SACEM and announced on 4 February 2011. "Sognu" will be sung in the Corsican language, which marks the first French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest to be sung in Corsican since "Mama Corsica" in 1993.
Regarding the decision to select Amaury Vassili and "Sognu", Pierre Sled, programme supervisor at France 3, declared: "We wanted someone young, representing the excellence of French music. We didn't hesitate much, given the fact that the other names were not satisfying". He also pointed out that "the choice was driven by the desire to promote a young talented artist representing the best of the French music and its diversity. That's why we quickly agreed an opera singer was the most elegant option. Amaury is an angel of music with a powerful voice. Without any hesitation, he was definitely the perfect choice."]This song will be presented on 7 March.
The song has been composed by Daniel Moyne and Quentin Bachelet (son of French singer Pierre Bachelet), who have been working with Vassili since the beginning of his career. The lyrics of "Sognu" have been written by Jean-Pierre Marcellesi. "Our goal is clear" - Pierre Sled assures - "France 3 is the channel of French regions and we wanted to have them honoured. Corsican is close to Italian, thus it will perfectly suit an opera song".
Vassili began singing around the age of 9 years, enrolled by his mother at a musical school in Rouen, created by Albert and Elizabeth Amsallem. At 14, Vassili contested in his first singing contest, were he won in singing "Amsterdam" by Jacques Brel (an idol of Vassili). In Vassili's second contest, in front of a full house, he sang "Les Lacs du Connemara" by Michel Sardou; however he did not qualify for the final, despite receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. During the contest, his mother realised how much he enjoyed being on the stage and especially the impact he had on the public, saying "C'est son truc !" ("it's his thing!"). In 2004, Vassili sang in the Coupe de France de la chanson française by winning the contest.
He became famous with his debut album Vincero from 2009, which went double platinum (over 250,000 copies) after a worldwide release.His second album Cantero was released in November 2010. Vassili describes his music style as "lyrical pop"

La chanson a été choisie en interne par France 3 et la SACEM et annoncée le 4 février 2011. "Sognu" sera chantée en langue corse qui signifie le songe en français. Le choix de la langue a été justifié par la proximité entre le corse et l'italien, qui est habituel pour du chant d'opéra. Il s'agit d'une chanson forte qui va crescendo et « portera idéalement la voix du jeune ténor »
Il commence le chant aux alentours de l'âge de 9 ans, inscrit par sa mère dans l'école de comédie musicale de Rouen, créée par Albert et Elisabeth Amsallem, qui le feront monter sur scène. À 14 ans, il fait un premier concours de chant qu'il gagne en interprétant Amsterdam de Jacques Brel.
Pour son second concours, devant une salle pleine, il interprète Les Lacs du Connemara, il ne sera pas qualifié pour la finale, mais la salle ne s'y trompe pas et est debout pour l'applaudir et chanter avec lui. C'est ce jour-là que sa mère prend conscience de son plaisir à être sur scène et surtout de l'impact qu'il a sur le public. Elle sait que « c'est son truc ! ».
Puis, à 15 ans, c'est la « Coupe de France de la chanson française » où il interprète Savoir aimer de Florent Pagny. Son challenge est de « signer » en chantant en direct (son idole l'avait fait en play back dans un clip). C'est un succès !
À partir de ce jour, il va s'essayer à tout le répertoire de Florent Pagny.
Quand ce dernier sort Baryton, c'est la révélation pour Amaury qui n'a que 16 ans, il travaille seul, toutes les chansons de cet album inspirées du répertoire lyrique dont il voudrait faire son répertoire favori.
Son registre est principalement axé sur les variétés. Ses influences sont principalement Florent Pagny, Il Divo, Josh Groban.
Amaury Vassili est un chanteur de variétés français né le 8 juin 1989 à Rouen. N'ayant suivi aucune formation lyrique ou musicale, il ne peut pas être considéré comme le plus jeune ténor professionnel au monde comme il prétend l'être . Avec son premier album Vincero en 2009 qui s'est vendu à plus de 200 000 exemplaires (double platine) en France, il a connu un succès à l'international, avec des sorties en Europe, mais aussi au Canada, en Afrique du Sud et au Corée du Sud
